How does one react to the developments concerning Irom Sharmila? I havent been able to make up my mind since the day before yesterday when the court ruled that her indefinite hunger strike was not akin to attempted suicide and, hence, she was released. On the one hand, it is reassuring to see criminality removed from her activism. On the other, if its not attempted suicide, the state cant and wont force feed her through the nostrils. This means shell now die of starvation if she continues with her hunger strike. Todays arrest is puzzling, too. But I wont indulge in the stupidity of pretending to be an expert on Manipuri affairs sitting here in Delhi and call for revocation of the AFSPA. Honestly, how many television studio experts have first hand information of the affected region?
