How does the IDF do an airstirke? 1st- they warn the locals. They broadcast on their cell phones, drop flares on the target site and sometimes drop small rockets that make lots of noise (like firecrackers) to warn civilians to get out of the building or target area. 2nd- they bomb the target. Why do they warn them? Isnt the idea to kill the bad guys? Yes BUT they dont want to kill everybody else- just the bad guy. Wont the bad guy run for it? Yes, he usually will but if he does the IDF can usually see him legging it (or driving or biking) and then they can cancel the airstrike on the house (which may have people in it) and instead do something more precise- using a smaller weapon to get the specific guy they are after. So why do we occasionally see big body counts? Because sometimes, instead of running away, they call in their relatives or they have thier friends force the neighbors at gun point to act as human shields. Usually, the IDF will cancel an airstrike at this point but sometimes the target is too dangerous (a missile site about to launch) or there is time (in the IDFs opinion) to launch the attack before the human shield is in place and they attack anyways. Then the bad guy dies and other people get hurt. Its an irony that the IDF places a higher value on the lives of the people in the combat zone than Hamas does.
