How does this sound were sending this to other children to learn about different towns and citys across England x Originally Wellingborough was named Wendlingburgh. After the saxon leader Waendel. We became a market town in 1201 by King john of England. Unfortunately the cattle market was built over in 1995 to make a theater. We still have a small museum and library. Thom York of Radiohead and Sir David Frost OBE came from Wellingborough. We have appox a population on 72000. The Doomsday book showed only 20 people living here in 1086. …In Wellingborough we have a dish called Ock and Dough – Recipe 1 large Ham Hock 1 large Diced onion 2 large potatoes 1pt stock 1lb suet pastry – 8oz self rasing flour 4 oz suet and water to mix Place the hock and vegetables in large casserole dish, pour over the stock, cook for 2 hours - place the pastry around the edge or dish and over the top bake for extra 45 mins until crispy Traditionally the pudding was bits of bread socked in hot milk and sugar- yuck! Our favourite pudding is Chocolate cake 6oz Butter 6 oz caster sugar 5oz self raising flour 1oz coco powder 3 eggs Cream the sugar and butter until fluffy and white slowly add the beaten eggs and sifted flour and coco powder until nice and mixed. Place in to a lined tin and cook for 40 mins( or until bouncy) on 180 oC we like serving it traditionally with whipped cream and raspberries. The main river Nene runs through Wellingborough. It’s a little fishing spot.. a great picnic spot and they have a water park there for the hot days. The River Nene is pronounced Nen. Years ago they had a pool there for children to go splash in. We used to have a zoo in the centre of Wellingborough it opened in 1943 by Mr john Stevens with a few animals Three lions, a herd of llamas, a wallaby a dozen monkeys a peacock, ponies, a donkey and several rare birds. How exciting would that have been? The owner used to take one of the lions to the pub and the chimps out for afternoon tea.. Regularly the animals escaped… some penguins was found in a garden and Boo Boo the monkey had to be rescued by a fireman. Lace was very popular in Welligborough. During the 18th century Wellingborough was recognised has having the largest lace community in the country. Every five weeks they had to take their lace off their pillow and met the lace buyer in the local brewery, the lace was then sold for a few coppers or some grocery. Find out a little more about lace its really interesting!
