How far na, how you dey, how una dey, wetin dey happen? These are all expressions in English language albeit a unique form of the language called pigeon English. To an outsider, pigeon English is a wonder to the ear- parading its own unique rules or lack of it together with its command and rhythm. Even between locations where it is widely spoken the differences could be very dramatic and captivating. Pigeon English is spoken across the length and breadth of Nigeria having deep roots in the South Central states of the country. Many would find it very surprising to know that the language is also overwhelmingly spoken in some West-African countries like Ghana and Liberia. As a medium of communication, we ask, how and when did we cultivate this unique and most flexible form of a language that seems to accommodate any form of modification by speakers? How much attention has it gained from our social and academic communities- moreover we know of American English, Canadian English, Australian English, so why not Pigeon English?
