How far would you go to find your missing daughter? Not exactly - TopicsExpress

How far would you go to find your missing daughter? Not exactly Taken, Prisoners follows dad, Hugh Jackman, as he tortures a young lad, Paul Dano, believing he is the abductor of his child. Jake Gyllenhaal, the primary detective on the case, tries to convince him hes not while going on his own wild and entertaining chase to find the true criminals. Terrence Howard, father of the other girl thats been abducted, reluctantly goes along with some of main fathers antics. Mystery and turns abound, leaving us confused as we should be, as we always are in criminal suspense. There are some moments of brilliance here, but the overall effect is disappointing. Hugh Jackmans character has potential, one which I doubt this actor could ever truly portray with anything other than shouting. Gyllenhaal is fun to watch here, as is the chase he is put on. Paul Dano and Terrence Howard should have been used a bit more, as they are clearly the two acting greats here, though maybe not the best ticket sellers. The real crime here is where the torture stops. As Jackmans character continues to build his rage and invent new ways to get answers from the feeble young Dano, we start to question him, ourselves, how far would we go. Yet, that line of the film abruptly ends there. The plot, to this point enticing, swerves a bit too hard, leaving us with a character we dont care about, all while enduring Amelia Bellos dreadful acting, and finally infuriating the viewer with disappointment. This could have been so much more. Entertaining to a point, but boy was I expecting more. rottentomatoes/m/prisoners_2013/
