How fitting it is that the Riley County Law Enforcement Center is on the street named for the first Sheriff in Riley County. Seth Child Road was named for Sheriff Seth Child. He was born in Vermont. In 1854 Seth moved his family from Illinois to NE Kansas in a mule drawn wagon. He bought government land along the Blue River NE of Manhattan at Juniata. This land later became the Casement Juniata Ranch. He was appointed as the first sheriff in spring of 1855. His law enforcement territory extended to the eastern boundary of Utah Territory in Colorado. He was postmaster for a time at Juniata. In 1858 he helped build the Congregational Church 700 Poyntz. He was the oldest person in Manhattan in 1913 when he died at age 86. rileycountyhistoricalmuseum.weebly/seth-i-child.html
