How headlines mislead us into needless parenting guilt: Headline on Sept 4: Yelling Doesnt Help, May Harm Adolescents, Pitt-Led Study Finds However, reading the study makes clear the researchers were not talking about the normal mommy-yelling at all, but harsh verbal discipline—defined as shouting, cursing, or using insults - HUGE difference. Yelling is definitely not a great parenting technique and I can definitely help you break that habit. Yelling doesnt do a good job at changing a childs behavior and tends to make both kid and parent feel pretty bad. And yes, cursing at and insulting a child can be very damaging. We dont know from the article, however, how they defined or measured shouting. Also, the sample size is fairly small. Much better conclusions can be draw from samples well over a thousand. Another reason to not freak out based on this study is that it has not yet been replicated by other researchers. That doesnt mean the study has incorrect conclusions, just that they must be replicated to carry real weight, scientifically.
