How many Territorians and far north Queenslanders remember this - TopicsExpress

How many Territorians and far north Queenslanders remember this beauty? Monica in 2006, was Australias strongest tropical cyclone in estimated sustained wind strengths. Cyclone Olivia in 1996 owned the record in terms of wind gusts, in fact Olivia boasts the worlds strongest recorded wind gust ever a MASSIVE 408KM/HR recorded on Barrow Island!!!! That 2006-2007 period was particularly bad for Australia with some major coastal crossings of Monica (NT cat 5 2006) George (WA 5 2007) Larry (QLD 4/5 2006) Glenda (WA 4/5 2006) Ingrid (NT 5 2006). Its not likely that in recorded Aussie history we had ever witnessed 5 Category 5 systems impacting the coast in just over 12 months. This active period came hot on the heels of the USAs most active hurricane season on record which included Wilma and Katrina (2005). This period in global weather really brought issues like the enhanced greenhouse effect, ocean warming, el nino/la nina and the associated global warming debate into the political spotlight (note that we dont want to start a global warming debate here). Thanks to northauschasers for sharing the following snippet on Monica
