How many of you can relate to life getting in the way of your wellness? In July of 2013 I learned my dad had stage 4 lung cancer, that had already spread to his liver, his bones, and his lymph nodes. My daughter (my 3rd child), was not even 1 year old yet. I hadnt yet regained my strength, endurance, and overall fitness from my third childs birth, when the blow of my dads health hit me. I spent the next 5 months traveling back and forth between my home in Texas and his home in Minnesota; I spent as much time with him as I could. And near the end, shared the responsibility of caring for him at home with my sister. In November, he gracefully and peacefully left us. If youve ever felt the pain of losing a parent, you know these last 10 months since his death have been nearly as hard as the 5 leading up to it. What I want everyone to understand, is that we all preach to pur ourselves first and to always care for ourselves first so we can better care for others. But sometimes, self care comes in the form of accepting that our best isnt awesome...sometimes putting ourselves first means practicing grace, patience, and understanding. What would my best friend have told me if the shoes were on the other feet? One year after learning of my dads illness, I was finally ready to serve others again. My best became recognizable to me again. And with love, patience, grace, and understanding, my body, my health, and my strength are finding their way again too. Accept each step along the path. The path may not always be flowers and sunshine meadows, but it is indeed your path. And the only way to live is to continue. Do your best. Embrace every lesson along the way. And if you survive, share your story. There is always someone who is in the storm needing to hear that someone made it.
