How many of you had Moms who made these? Every year in September, my mother would start the annual baking of fruitcake. These were Christmas presents for family members who, for some reason, loved them. I hated the nasty things and still do to this day. We had a butler pantry off the kitchen and stacked high were round tin cans of fruitcakes, covered in cheesecloth that had been drenched in wine. Every few weeks she would open them all and pour more Mogen David onto them, I guess to make sure that you got properly hammered when you ate a slice. Relatives would expect them and heap lavish praise on my mothers culinary efforts. I, on the other hand, couldnt wait for the last one to be delivered so I could open the kitchen door and windows and air the stench out!
