How many of you had a turkey waiting for you when you got home - TopicsExpress

How many of you had a turkey waiting for you when you got home from Vietnam? No matter the day, mom still made you a turkey. Surely, it was to give thanks for those who returned. Many living room windows had Christmas trees still standing, the bare branches still holding ornaments, months after the tree went up. Many families waited until the son came home before the tree would be taken down. There was a family whose son was returning home that lived down the street from us. Their son had been wounded and placed in a VA hospital that was too far from them to visit often. Finally he was being released, and this was on short notice. Some neighbors mowed their yard for them, sort of cleaned up the outside of the home. Someone hung Christmas lights, one talented carpenter built a handicap ramp for the front door and the back door since their son would need one. A few people did so much. But of course, there were turkey dinners waiting for them when they arrived home. More than one mom of a soldier lived on that street.
