How many of you knew that the esteemed actor Sir Anthony Hopkins, started out as a pianist at the Cardiff Academy of Drama and Music? He also composed, and wrote this lyrical waltz when he was just 19, but then, in his own words, I just drifted into acting at the Academy because I thought there was no future for me in music. Of course, the rest, they say, is history, as he went on to become one of todays most riveting actors. What became of his compositions? Well, one day in 2011,he was watching TV and saw a New Years Day concert full of waltzes with André Rieus orchestra. He plucked up courage, and rang Andres agent in New York. As Andre says here, when he got the call from Sir Anthony, he could hardly believe it! Well, the two met and collaborated, and finally in 2011, in the Grand Hall of Maastricht, Sir Anthony was onvited to be the guest of honor, and finally heard his waltz performed by a symphony orchestra in public for the very first time. The standing ovation he receives both before and after the waltz are simply priceless! I love stories like this- it makes me happy to be connected in some small way in the wonderful life of a musician. No matter what your opinion of Andre Rieu, or waltzes in general, this sort of thing makes me believe in the triumph of the human spirit and serendipity at work. Enjoy!
