How many people remember dancing to or enjoying the music at a variety of functions of any or all of the following bands who played in and around Cairns and the Tablelands and Innisfail in the mid to late sixties? I have included some of my recollections that might jog some memories in brackets. The Lenny Pitt Orchestra (played at our wedding reception at the Impy in 1969), The Black and White Orchestra (played for Sat nite old-time dances at the Edge Hill Progress Hall off Collins Ave - Grace Donnelly on piano),The Fireflies (extensive line up over the years but Johnny Sues and Tommy Duffy still have life membership and the new line-up still plays on special occasions), Michael and the Mustangs ( a fixture at the Aquatic Hall on the esplanade every Friday night. Cheryl Fulton on bass and Michael Turner had just the perfect voice for doing all the R&R and R&B hits of the era), The Valiants (Ric Montgomery on lead guitar, Billy Bussell on drums, Billy J Reardon on organ, Alan Harvey on vocals), The Entity (Ric and Billy J formed a new group - Jimmy Ross on bass and vocals, me on rhythm guitar - photo from Sounds in the Sun era posted below), The Bay Street Union (the May brothers - Peter and Robert), The Embers (played the Impy Beer Lounge - Tommy Nichols on bass and Pat Luske on lead), Copper Sole (see other previous posts for photo), Force V (Montgomery brothers, Ric and Gary, Michael Turner on vocals and Bobby Anderson on bass), The Web Trio (three siblings - photo on Lost Cairns, soft rock and folk), The Sapphires (Barney Bainbridge on rhythm, Keith Caesar on lead). Apologies in advance for any errors and omissions.
