How many times will you change your career in your - TopicsExpress

How many times will you change your career in your lifetime? When I started out in the employment sector years ago, I was told a person would change their career 4 – 5 times throughout their lifetime. I was really surprised by this as my father had been in the same career forever! Since then, that number has increased to 7 times and now it is estimated that the average person will change their career 7 – 10 times in their lifetime. Is this really true? Or do I have to re-adjust my definition of what a career is? Is there disconnect between what I think I want as a career and what I really need to do? Am I blindly following in the footsteps of a mentor, not really knowing what I want to do for myself? Can I honestly say that at this point in my life, this is what I want to do as a career? Many questions must be answered when choosing a career. The first one however, may not be the one you think it is. It is the difference between having a career and loving a career! Who am I? Once I know this, I may actually make an informed decision on the best career for me. I can then ask the question, what is my purpose? Many career changes stem from this exact question. In an attempt to find my purpose, I have floundered; trying different careers, just for the sake of trying them. I have made true attempts only to see all of my education gets thrown out the window. I have been the best employee in a survival job! I have had conversations with people who have had over 200 jobs in their lifetime and attempted over 35 different careers all because, after much reflection, they had no purpose. I have also had conversations with people who have worked in one job for 25 years and asked themselves, what do I do now? Again, after much reflection, the answer was simple, “What is my purpose?” and “What do I want now?” Whether you are working, looking for a job, looking for purpose or have found your purpose in life: start asking yourself questions. 7 to 10 careers in a lifetime just seems like waste of valuable time and a misuse of skills.
