How much time have you got today? ‘Time management’ - it’s a - TopicsExpress

How much time have you got today? ‘Time management’ - it’s a phrase that gets used a lot and unfortunately is often accompanied with the phrase “I don’t have enough time!” But have you ever seen any one being able to manage time to go at a speed they want it, or create more minutes, hours, weeks etc? I certainly haven’t. This is where we are all the same everywhere in the world – we all have the same amount of “time” in each 24 hours. But here’s the key – it’s not about trying to create more time, what’s important is what you do with each moment. That’s what counts and to be honest that is actually how you can, in effect, buy yourself more time! If you think you don’t have enough time in the day now just imagine what it must have been like years ago. You certainly couldn’t maximise your time thanks to technology. Today, if you’re organised you set the dishwasher to go, at the same time as the washing machine, at the same time as you carry out some vacuuming, at the same time as your website and social media pages are ‘selling’ your business offerings. Years ago all of these tasks could have taken days and, some hadn’t even been invented. I am affirm believer and have living proof that the adage ‘ask and you shall receive’ works. Hey if the above analogy is anything to go by it has worked. As humans we asked for more efficiency and technology has delivered. Yet we continue to complain that there is ‘never enough time’ to do all that we want. So how can you create some freedom around your time? Here is what I suggest. 1. Identify what it is you value most 2. Book in time in your days and weeks to achieve some of these things (if you had a client or appointment booked in you wouldn’t change that right, so why let yourself down by not valuing yourself first). An example of this could be a walk 3 times a week - book the walks into your dairy/daily planner/ calendar etc. and commit to that appointment. If you leave it in the vague “I will go for 3 walks sometime this week’ there’s a high chance it won’t occur because you never scheduled it 3. In business separate the to-do list between the ‘urgent’ and the ‘important’ but don’t make the mistake of always doing the urgent first. It is usually the ‘important’ that will move your business forward, whereas the ‘urgent’ could potentially be done by someone else or will usually consume most of your day and prevent you from getting to what is really ‘important’. This third tip is pivotal to your success and whilst I have indicated it is a business tool to success the same rule can and should be applied to your personal life. Know and understand the difference between the distracting urgent tasks and the all important tasks. Can we have it all? Is there enough time for everyone? Actually yes there is! You just have to be prepared to step up and take responsibility for managing your time better so that you buy yourself more time sustainably.
