How much was the phone bill? By Craig Johnson This is another story about a dependent. My darling wife just after we were married decided she was going to make me a recipe from her home in Manila, Philippines. This created a problem for her thought. You see according to her Mother she was spoiled by her Father and had never done anything around the house growing up. She had been a student and in fact she was working on her Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology at George Washington University in Washington DC. While living with her brother who apparently had done most of the cooking. So while I was on a business trip she had called her mother in Manila who walked her through the pansit recipe and the Shanghai lumpia. You have to understand this was before the internet and was an international phone call. When I came back off of trail my new wife made me pansit every day for a month. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. The result being that it took another twenty some years for her to get me to eat it again. The next thing was that we spent a weekend making Shanghai Lumpia that I would take to the office for lunch. This resulted in a problem in that one of the young female civil servants would see them in the office refrigerator and eat them. To stop her raids on my lunch I got the aid of all the Naval Officers in the office from the Captain down. There were five of us and we concocted a plan. The next day I brought more lumpia for lunch to set the trap. Once the Captain saw her eating my lumpia he went to her and executed our plan by leading off with, You like Craigs wifes cooking? She replied that she did and that is when the Captain sprung the surprise. The Captain goes, Did you know that Craig and his wife use dog meat to make those to save money? She spit out the lumpia and then whet, Your kidding? The Captain then told her that we went to the pound to get dogs and then I would butcher them and it was a lot cheaper than beef. Lets just say that I worked with her for years and even after she was told it was a joke she never ate my wifes cooking again. But lets digress to the afternoon of our prank. My wife is coming home from school and the local authorities were there wanting her to show her shopping receipts for meat. She called me and I came right home to meet with the city officials and explain what had happened and why. My wife was upset with me for a while that the city officials had accused her of cooking and eating dog. I did offer to dog set for the civil servant and she never took me up on it. Now all of this had taken place since my wife had called her mother in Manila and when I came home one day the phone bill was waiting. I settled in to being home before I looked at the mail. When I opened the phone bill I went through the roof since that recipe for pansit cost me $500. All I kept saying to my new wife was did she know how much that phone bill was and that was a $500 recipe?
