How short term can our thinking BE?? Bad nutrition and going hungry stunts kids health and growth, including brain development. They can never recover from it. Do we want more people with learning problems in our country? We are all in this together, no matter how much the Republicans do not want to admit it. The well being of our people affects us all. Look at countries where poverty is common, where poor nutrition is common, where disease with little treatment is common - it is a downward spiral that is super hard to turn around. We have had some decent momentum and progress as a society here - why are so many so willing to stymie that and give it up? Why do so many fail to see that our success is dependent on each other? I blame right wing media for brainwashing this country for the last 40 years - selling what I recognize as themes from the John Birch Society of my childhood. They have drowned out the brainwashing I grew up on, which was towards unity, equality, valuing each other as Americans - the unity messages that came out of two world wars, the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl - which taught Americans that we can do great things when we pull together, and that No Man Is An Island..... from the poem... Is that song sung in our schools, any more? What, there is no music program in your school now? Well, isnt that interesting.
