How to Avoid Injury While Getting into Shape: by Cathy Smith of Advantage Healthcare and Physiotherapy. You have decided to get into shape for summer. Before you overdo it, here are a few tips to get into shape – without the risk of the painful results. Begin slowly with moderate exercise of about half an hour a day, three or four times a week and gradually build up. A warm-up before you exercise allows your muscles to handle the stress of a workout. Begin slowly; walk before you run. Whatever you think you can do, reduce the target. We all like to think we are fitter – and younger - than we really are and that’s when an injury is most likely. If it hurts, dont do it. We’ve all heard about “pushing through the pain barrier”, but this can be a fast track to injury. If you experience sharp pain, weakness or light-headedness during exercise, your body is telling you that something is wrong. Slow down or stop. Know your bodys limits. None of us is getting younger. This should not prevent us from healthy exercise but we need to remember we can’t do everything we did when we were young and we take longer to recover from exercise. Most important, seek advice from a health professional before you begin any new exercise regime. This is even more important if you have chronic injuries or health conditions.
