How to Breed Fighting Cocks There are different approaches being used in breeding fighting cocks. Some breed for show purposes while others do it for cockfighting reasons. This last purpose is the most popular and precisely the reason why a lot of people breed gamecocks in the first place. Below, let us look at some of the principles and approaches used in breeding game fowls. Foundation is Important The foremost consideration is the strain or genetic foundation of both the brood cock and the hen. If the genetic foundation is suspect, then it must not be done in the first place. Too much time and money is involved in breeding fighting cocks that to start with a wrong foundation can mean a disaster to the breeder. The Brood Cock must be Aged and a Winner Very few breed fighting cocks that are not winners. An excellent brood cock must have won a major fight and did not suffer major wounds in the process. Some breeders even insist that the cock must not have been wounded in its fight to be considered a good brood cock. In-breeding This is the method used by expert breeders. In-breeding is very good if you know what you are doing. It is used to make sure that a particular bloodline is preserved and the best that can come out of it is brought into existence. Throwbacks are a normal occurrence when in-breeding is done and this is shown in physical defects like crooked feet, twisted beak and other phenotype anomalies. It takes several generations before the ideal phenotype is achieved in in-breeding and to this the expert breeders are very patient. Line-breeding Line-breeding is not similar to in-breeding although the same family of game fowls are being bred. A grandfather bred to a granddaughter or a nephew bred to an aunt is called line-breeding. This is one approach to perpetuate the bloodline and also to maximize the potential available to the strain. Cross-breeding This is done by breeding different strains of game fowls. Breeding a Kelso with a Claret is called cross breeding as they both belong to different strains. The result is a hybrid of the two strains and can be named after the breeder or whatever name to give the fighting cock its own identity. Foreign breeders in particular are meticulous in breeding their game fowl and follow one or all of the methods above. This is one reason why most of the fighting cocks that have the most winning potential come from other countries. They focus on the deep gameness of the cocks and perpetuate a particular strain through scientific breeding. Although the same method is used in other countries where the sport of cockfighting is popular like the Philippines, Hawaii, and Mexico to name a few, some backyard breeders still follow the traditional way of breeding frighting cocks. The traditional way is to breed a fighting cock that is a winner with three different hen and from there see if the stags will have the qualities of their father.
