How to Detect a Social Media Troll: 1. Any response just encourages them and if they get a rise out of you? Well, it can get ugly. 2. They are quick to respond publicly especially on Twitter because they love to have the dialogue documented so that the media can quickly write an article. Remember, unlike most public figures, Trolls do not have publicists. This is very important to understand. Rather than getting booked interviews and appearances, Trolls only have social media and use the ignorance of their followers to get their story out. 3. They must be ignored. Trolls exist for the spotlight. Often ignoring them will either make them simply go away or they’ll say even more ridiculous things making them look foolish and desperate. 4. If you feel you HAVE to respond, wait at least an hour. Decide if you really have to take action at all. Be nice (If you can help it). Anger only encourages response. Something very short and to the point like “thank you for your point of view”. is enough. The more you say, the more you feed ‘em. And boy are they hungry! 5. If your followers respond angrily the whole thing can escalate quickly too. After all, you’re not the only one who can encourage the troll. Laugh it off or kill them with kindness by thanking them for their viewpoint and passion and ignore any further responses. 6. Don’t attempt to show them the error of their ways. That just encourages them. Logic, reason and statistics only give fuel to the fire. 7. If the post is abusive, hateful or uses bad language delete it. If it’s on your blog or a website, forum, or block their IP address and put them on the blacklist. 8. Never explain to a Troll why you will not be responding to their ridiculous rants. 9. They will try to delete all of their comments that are ignorant so that you seem like the crazy one. 10.
