How to Hold a Sled Loading Contest A sled loading contest is a timed event. The best time wins the event. The rules are as follows: 1. Horses or mules (teams or singles) are hooked to a sled. 2. On the signal, the sled is driven around a track to four bales of hay stacked on pallets. 3. The hay is loaded onto the sled and the sled is driven to the next pallet, which is loaded with four bags of feed. 4. The feed is loaded and the sled is driven back to the first pallet, where the hay is unloaded onto the pallet. 5. The sled is driven to the second pallet and the feed is unloaded onto the pallet. 6. The sled is then driven across the finish line. 7. For each bale of hay or sack of feed not loaded back on the pallet (touching the ground) a 5-second penalty is assessed. 8. Each entry consists of one driver and one loader. 9. The driver and loader may ride the sled or walk/run with the sled. 10. Both the driver and the loader must go around the track or designated path with the sled. ~ Joe Turner Rural Heritage, Vol. 6, No. 6, 1981-82
