How to Properly Speak to a Cop (PG Version): As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is especially true when speaking to a member of the law enforcement following a possible violation of the law. Should you or a loved one be placed in this compromising position, keep the following tips in mind: 1) Inform the officer that you will sign the complaint. Only the truly innocent (or sociopathic?) are willing to assist the police in their investigation. This gesture may unconsciously bias the investigation in your favor. 2) Point out evidence and witnesses that could help your case. Evidence and witnesses tend to disappear. Unlike ‘The Wire’ or ‘Law and Order’, police are generally not doing extensive canvasing for witnesses or evidence. If you are aware of someone or something that could help your case, letting the police officer know may help in a subsequent, private investigation. 3) Say, “Officer, you’ll have my full cooperation within 24 hours of speaking to my attorney.” Of course, cooperation is important, but there are limits. This is a powerful may of protecting your rights. Thanks everyone for your continued feedback! If you have a topic you would love to see me tackle, send me a message and I will post as time permits.
