How to Protect a House Against Lightning Strikes By J. Johnson, eHow Contributor Instructions 1 Install a lightning-rod system. Should lightning strike near your house, it will be drawn to the lightning rod. Make sure the lightning-rod system you choose includes a ground connector so that the lightning is safely conducted toward the ground. The system should also have approval from either the Lightning Protection Institute or the Underwriters Laboratory. 2 Ground any outdoor television antennas. This should be done in addition to a installing a lightning-rod system. You can also connect the TV antenna to the lightning rod system for added protection. 3 Arrange to have a secondary lightning arrester added to your home. This arrester is installed in the service wires right where they enter your home, and will help protect your appliances from getting burned out by nearby lightning strikes, which cause electrical surges. 4 Plug the major appliances in your home into surge protectors, rather than standard wall outlets. You can get a surge protector at most department or home-improvement stores. They often support eight to 10 plugs at once.
