How to Take an Amazing Portrait... The best portraits are simplistic yet have lasting impact and wow. Achieving this simplicity may take a photographer years to perfect. It took me a good two to three years before I could feel fairly comfortable with my portrait skills. I dont think Ive mastered it and Im still learning after 15 years of practicing. Its like golf or playing an instrument, one never quite masters it and always has something to learn. After teaching thousands of photographers, Here is an approach that has proven to be quite successful... 1.Start with a basic or fundamental pose 2. Fine tune with many micro adjustments to maximize beauty of subject. 3. Try to incorporate the hands 4. Make a connection with your subject- create positive energy, be a leader and take control, subjects love to follow. 5. Use a clean and non-distracting background 6. Add great lighting to match the pose (catch lights in the eyes) A great portrait will be admired for decades, its a great privilege to be given the opportunity to photograph someone so make the best of it. You may experience some failure in the beginning but with practice you can develop a skill that one can build a career on!
