How to see god through meditation? By Sri Pandit Anandji Sukul, M.A. In the current age of kali yuga one can very easily see God through mantra meditation, the process recommended for this kali yuga. As there are four yugas, similarly there are four different process to see God. The religious practice for the Age of Kali is to broadcast the glories of the holy name. Only for this purpose has the Lord, in a yellow color, descended as Lord Caitanya. PURPORT In this Age of Kali the practical system of religion for everyone is the chanting of the name of Godhead. This was introduced in this age by Lord Caitanya. Bhakti-yoga actually begins with the chanting of the holy name, as confirmed by Madhvacarya in his commentary on the Mundaka Upanisad. He quotes this verse from the Narayana-samhita: dvapariyair janair visnuh pancaratrais tu kevalaih kalau tu nama-matrena pujyate bhagavan harih In the Dvapara-yuga people should worship Lord Visnu only by the regulative principles of the Narada-pancaratra and other such authorized books. In the Age of Kali, however, people should simply chant the holy names of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Hare Krsna mantra is specifically mentioned in many Upanisads, such as the Kali-santarana Upanisad, where it is said: hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare iti sodasakam namnam kali-kalmasa-nasanam natah parataropayah sarva-vedesu drsyate After searching through all the Vedic literature, one cannot find a method of religion more sublime for this age than the chanting of Hare Krsna. harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha In Kali-yuga life is very short (prayenalpayusaa), and people are generally undisciplined (mandah), misguided (sumanda-matayah), and overwhelmed by the unfavorable results of their previous activities (manda-bhagyah). Thus their minds are never peaceful (upadrutaah), and their very brief life span vitiates the possibility of their gradually progressing through the path of Vedic ritualistic activities. Therefore, the only hope is to chant the holy names of the Lord, harer nama. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam (12.3.51) it is stated: My dear King, although Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: Simply by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom. PURPORT After mentioning the innumerable faults of this age of Kali, Sukadeva Gosvami now mentions its one brilliant aspect. Just as one powerful king can kill innumerable thieves, one brilliant spiritual quality can destroy all the contamination of this age. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, especially in this fallen age. Whatever result was obtained in Satya-yuga by meditating on Visnu, in Treta-yuga by performing sacrifices, and in Dvapara-yuga by serving the Lords lotus feet can be obtained in Kali-yuga simply by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra. PURPORT A similar verse is found in the Visnu Purana (6.2.17), and also in the Padma Purana (Uttara-khanda 72.25) and the Brhan-naradiya Purana (38.97): dhyayan krte yajan yajnais tretayam dvapare rcayan yad apnoti tad apnoti kalau sankirtya kesavam Whatever is achieved by meditation in Satya-yuga, by the performance of sacrifice in Treta-yuga, and by the worship of Lord Krsnas lotus feet in Dvapara-yuga is obtained in the age of Kali simply by glorifying the name of Lord Kesava. From the Brahma-vaivarta Purana concerning the degraded condition of people in Kali-yuga: atah kalau tapo-yoga- vidya-yajnadikah kriyah sanga bhavanti na krtah kusalair api dehibhih Thus in the age of Kali the practices of austerity, yoga meditation, Deity worship, sacrifice and so on, along with their various subsidiary functions, are not properly carried out, even by the most expert embodied souls. The Caturmasya-mahatmya of the Skanda Purana concerning the necessity of chanting Hare Krsna in this age: tatha caivottamam loke tapah sri-hari-kirtanam kalau yuge visesena visnu-prityai samacaret In this way the most perfect penance to be executed in this world is the chanting of the name of Lord Sri Hari. Especially in the age of Kali, one can satisfy the Supreme Lord Visnu by performing sankirtana.
