How to show gratitude (Grace in Action): When we say “thank you,” we recognize the giver as well as the gift. The more thoughtful the gift, the greater our response, perhaps even exclaiming, “I don’t have words to describe my gratitude.” How, then, are we to give thanks to God for such great gifts of life and love, for mercy, compassion, forgiveness and salvation? To give thanks for such profound gifts is certainly beyond mere words. In fact, the greatest sign of our gratitude is to give of ourselves as freely and lavishly as the Giver. This month, our Sunday readings remind us to be awake, to be watchful for Christ’s return in glory. We must be watchful, too, for signs of Christ’s presence within and among us now, in this moment, since the kingdom of God is here and yet not fully here. We understand that living in this watchful, waiting way is to live as stewards who grow in gratitude and in giving, anxious to bear witness to Christ, the servant-King whose reign is at hand.
