How to take care of your baby during flu...? Taking care of a baby’s health is one of the topmost concerns of a mother. It is a real difficult time for both the baby and the mother if the baby falls sick. Common ailments like flu, stomach problems, cough, cold, skin irritations are some of the issues that a baby might face during the first year of life. Flu and cold and cough symptoms are very common and spread to a baby quickly if anyone is unwell at home or due to seasonal changes. However, there are a few steps that can help you alleviate the situation for your baby in case he is not well and is suffering from flu. Some of the common tips that you should follow are as follows. Dress up your baby appropriately- In case your baby is suffering from flu it is important to keep him warm. However, ensure that he does not get overheated as that might increase his discomfort level and might prove to be fatal. Practice the concept of layer clothing to keep the baby warm, so that you can easily and accordingly remove or add layers in case your baby overheats or feels cold. Wash your hands and your baby’s hands- You should ensure that you wash your baby’s hands and your hands as you will be the one handling the baby so that you can arrest the spreading of the infection causing virus further. Use a hand sanitizer that is specifically made for babies to keep his hands clean. Use a humidifier- Difficulty in breathing might be one of the common discomforting attributes that your baby might face. Other symptoms might include nasal congestion due to accumulation of mucus, chapped lips, dry and itchy skin, fever etc. Using a humidifier to increase the moisture content in the room can make it easy for your baby to breathe. It can also provide a lot of relief from other discomforts like itchy skin, nasal congestion etc. as a humidifier keeps the air in the room comfortable by increasing the moisture content. Continue breastfeeding your baby- You should ensure that your baby is breastfed properly. He might refuse to be nursed due to the discomfort of the flu however; you can pump the milk out, using a breast pump and feed him by the means of a bottle as the breast milk contains the necessary antibodies that can help him in fighting the infection. In addition, with continuous and regular nursing sessions his bowel movements will be regular that might help in letting out some of the mucus as for the new born babies some of the mucus is let out through the bowels as they are not capable of letting it out on their own by blowing their nose etc. Consult a doctor- In case of high fever or severe nasal congestion it is always advisable to consult a doctor so that with the right medical help, you can administer some medicines that might assist in a quicker recovery for the baby. Use of nasal drops- You can also use some saline drops to soften the mucus and to clear the nasal congestion. You can then use nasal aspirator to clean the nose of the baby and to keep free from mucus and other debris that can aid in comfortable breathing for the baby. In addition, you should ensure that the temperature of the room in which your baby stays is comfortable. And above all, you should ensure that you give a lot of love to your baby to ensure that he is on the path of quick recovery. Do not get into a panic mode and follow the tips mentioned above to make life comfortable for your baby.
