How to treat and minimize shock while administering first aid: Recognizing the signs and symptoms of shock as well as beginning early treatment for shock is one of your primary concerns. If shock has already developed, proper first aid treatment can prevent shock from becoming more serious or even fatal. • First aid for shock includes treating the cause. Examples of treating the cause include controlling bleeding by directing pressure on a wound or removing a casualty who is sensitive to the sight of blood from an accident scene. • Additionally, reassure the casualty and allow them to rest. Comforting the casualty can help calm them and lower their heart rate. • Loosen restrictive clothing and maintain normal body temperature by placing a blanket over them. • If the casualty is alert, place him or her on their back with their feet and legs slightly elevated. This is called the shock position. This position helps to encourage blood flow to the brain • If the casualty is unconscious, place them in the recovery position, as described later in this chapter.
