How to use calisthenics to improve your military press There are a variety of ways, so this is not at all an exhaustive list. While the majority of your practice should simply go toward pressing (to quote the old Russian weightlifters saying To press a lot, you must press a lot), throwing in a few exercises that will assist you to that end is a must after a while. So what are, say, the top 3? Im glad you asked. My vote goes to the following, in no particular order. 1) The Back Bridge (with upper back emphasis) * This gets included first just because I think its incredibly underrated as a military press builder. While it wont likely add a lot to your strength per se, what it *WILL* do is mobilize your thoracic spine and stretch your pecs wide open - crucial for taking your bodys figurative foot off the E-brake and letting you press with success. To do it, just get into the back bridge and push most of your weight onto your hands. Ease into it - a little dab will do ya, so dont gun it right off the bat. 2) One-arm pushup * This more than anything helped me nail my first half-bodyweight one-arm military press. Not only does it teach your body full-body tension, linkage from top to bottom, and some pretty hefty coordination, it also does a lot to strengthen the hell out of your pecs and triceps in a way that a military press doesnt quite do on its own. 3) Handstand pushup * The handstand pushup is great not only because it grooves the right path for the movement, but it also doesnt trash your legs and glutes the same way standing military presses do, which means more volume for your practice - and more volume = more strength. Plus, it was a favorite of everyone from yours truly to people whose names carry a little more weight in the strength world, namely guys like Paul Anderson, a guy who captivated the world with his unreal, superhuman strength levels. I could go on and on, but this should be a good start for anyone seeking to improve their military press.
