How to use some linking words ( part one ) 1/ Expressing addition : In addition (to) – as well as – moreover – what’s more – not only…but also – furthermore – besides – also – too – then – etc . These words/phrases are used to introduce additional information; i.e. add information or join one idea to another similar idea. Example : To be proficient in a foreign language, you need to master its grammar and vocabulary. In addition to this, you need to gain insight into the culture of the people who speak that language. 2/ Expressing contrast : Although – though –even though – in spite of – despite – however – yet – on the contrary – whereas – on the other hand – nevertheless – regardless – conversely – no matter how – notwithstanding – etc . These expressions are used to contrast two ideas. Examples : 1/ Our district has been short of water for about five months now. However, nothing has been done about it so far. 2/ Karim takes after his father whereas Rachid takes after his mother. 3/ In spite of his old age; my grandfather is attending a literacy night school.
