How true these comments are to our profession. I started medical private practice in 1983. It has had its ups & downs. We were taught to practice holistic medicine, a mix of clinical diagnosis aided by judicious investigation , with aggressive and targeted pharmacological treatment and if indicated surgical or invasive percutaneous semi-invasive treatment; all this was wrapped in a sugar-coated, gentile capsule of humane compassion. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO TREAT THE PERSON NOT JUST THE DISEASE. All this has changed. A NOBLE PROFESSION HAS CHANGED TO A CORPORATE DRIVEN, INCENTIVE GUIDED , VOLUME BASED BUSINESS . Popularity of a doctor , today , no longer depends on ability , knowledge, compassion or experience. A eminent doctor has multiple ABCD degrees , a large , well-decorated office manned by secretaries , PROs , assistants and equipment. A stethoscope is replaced by scanners , Xrays , biochemistry tests. Clinical judgment is replaced by investigational based medicine. Discussion is primed by artistically decorated brochures and websites , with FAQs Trust is replaced by multiple institutionally protective and doctor/patient/family signed consent forms. If permitted to go back in time, to 1972 , I am sure that I would opt for another profession.
