How was your NCA? A big shout-out to our wonderful alumni, who made us so proud. Current faculty and students who presented: Jarrod Atchison presented the papers, “Amplifying Emasculation: Images of Jefferson Daviss Capture in Womens Clothes,” and “Conspiracy Theories: Arguing for/from the Fringe.” Erica Bullock presented the paper, “Tokenism and Colorism in Relation to the American Dream.” Michael D. Hazen chaired the panel, “Communication: Interconnections of the Local and the Global.” He also participated in the Japan-U.S. Communication Association Business Meeting and the Eurasian Communication Association of North America Business Meeting. Michael Hyde received the 2013 NCA Distinguished Scholar Award. He discussed his research in the panel “NCA Distinguished Scholars of 2013: Reflections on their Scholarship.” He also chaired, “Scholar to Scholar: Crisis, Risk and Moral Responsibility” and “A Conversation with Eric King Watts: Connections with the Arnold Lecturer.” He presented in “Connection as relationship: How is recognition an ethical imperative? A roundtable panel”; “Finding a Language for our Biotechnological Future”; and “Organizational Ethics Training: What Weve Learned and the Community Connections Weve Created.” John T. Llewellyn presented the paper, “Before Brown: The Political Rhetoric of the Long Civil Rights Movement,” and chaired the panel, “Food, Place, and Protest: Making and Breaking the Boundaries of Free Speech in the Modern Era.” Leah Moczulski presented the paper, “Paying for Sluts: Rush Limbaugh’s Vilification of Sandra.” Jennifer Priem and Lauren Bailey presented the paper “Sliding Versus Deciding: A Theme Analysis of Deciding Conversations of Non-Engaged Cohabiting Couples.” Lora Smith presented the paper, “The Carter Family Fold: A Symbol of Nostalgia and a Place of Memory.” Sarah Snider Greene presented the paper, “Building Connections and Breaking Linkages: The Politics of Coalition-Building in Resistance and Activism in Competitive Policy Debate.” Matt Struth (in absentia) presented the paper, “Contemporary Energy Dilemmas: Bridging Debate and Academic Research.” Alessandra Von Burg was elected to the American Society for the History of Rhetoric Steering Committee and is the new President of NCA-Forum. Ron Von Burg participated in the NCA-Forum Business Meeting and organized the double-session on ‘Scholarly Metrics in a Digital Age.’ Margaret D. Zulick chaired the panel, “Shall It Not Utterly Wither? A Discussion on Religion’s Growing Rhetorical Disconnect with the Outside World.”
