How we get lots of good hunting tags as a family. Isaac’s bull - TopicsExpress

How we get lots of good hunting tags as a family. Isaac’s bull elk story. I have a nephew (Robert) that is very close to my age. We have always been close. We used to hunt a lot together. The last 10 years or so he has just worked his tail off getting a company going and I said hey your kids are growing up, take them hunting. At least apply for the best hunts. Because then you will really go. He would always get busy and forget to apply. Isaac. Robert’s son really wants to go hunting. I said I will put you in for some good hunts and we discussed what he wanted. He mostly just wanted to go hunting and he would be happy to shoot a spike elk or a two point deer. When the draw results came out Isaac had drawn a youth only elk tag. This is not a really hard tag to draw and what it gives you is a few weeks before the normal over the counter elk tag hunt you can take the kids hunting. Now I have a problem. My plan was to take him hunting on all of these hunts if he drew. The problem is that I drew too many tags and other nephews have tags that need my help at the same time. I knew that Robert knows how to hunt. He has horses and probably could do as good as job as I could. I told them where to go on opening Saturday in the truck hunting. They did not see anything. The next week they were packing in on horses. It was about 8 miles from where they could get the horse trailers too. I had told them to buy a big bag of candy and sit under a tree where the forest sticks out into a large meadow. I told them If you sit there under that tree, open the bag of candy and eat it for a few days. Before the bag of candy is gone I think you will get an elk. You need the bag of candy or Isaac will go nuts. I get a text a few days later saying my story about the candy was all wrong. I am not sure what that means but I also think they are home early. I am worrying that they saw nothing. I was excited and called and met Isaac at his house to hear the story. Here is the story the best I can remember as told me by Isaac. We pack in and stop about .5 mile from where you told us to hunt and we set up camp. We have not seen or heard any elk. Very little sign as well. The next morning we go to the spot you told us to go. Grandpa said he would stay in camp and rest up. We are on our way there and we start hearing elk bugling. We come to the edge of the meadow and there is a spike. I am going to shoot it, I tell my dad. He said lets see if we can get a little closer. There are cows all over the place and multiple bulls bugling. As we are getting closer a really nice big bull walks out of the trees. Now I am real excited and I start shooting. The elk do not run or anything. I think I am missing? As I am reloading and look back up the bull is not there. Finally the cows start running off. Not sure what is happening. We walk out into the meadow and there he is laying down. I had hit him good and he did not even run. Wow it is a great bull. Grandpa almost did not believe I had shot a bull when we got back to camp. He had not heard shots or anything. 8 miles is a long way to pack out an elk. I hope you like the pictures. I sure wish my first bull was anywhere near as good as this bull. This hunt is not a hunt you build up points for. I love putting in my nephews and nieces who like to hunt. We have had some really fantastic hunts doing this. Oh yeah and why the candy bag was wrong. They never opened the bag of candy. We use an app to help us apply for hunts all around the west. It reminds us of when to apply. I used to do it all by hand but it took way too much time. This app makes things way easier. PointHunter is the name of the app. Preference/Bonus Points and application reminder app. $1.99. Key features 1.
