How well do dogs remember people from their past? Pretty darn - TopicsExpress

How well do dogs remember people from their past? Pretty darn well, so it would seem! I had Tully out on leash in the front yard to do his business as the backyard is still a quagmire. He peed but wanted to snout around a bit so I let him do so. A couple were walking down the street towards our house, though, so I kept an eye on him. Tully is a very good judge of character and can read people immediately, so imagine my surprise when the alert and ready White Shepherd became a baby puppy, ears curled down, doing the Tully Dance and whining to meet these new folks. The woman asked if she could pet him and they greeted each other like lost friends. The man and I shrugged as Tully insisted on giving ear kisses, the highest accolade he can bestow on a human. The gentleman asked questions about him, praised his looks and his friendly ways, with me smiling ( and adding an inner eye roll! ) as I traced his progress from feral lunatic, to the BWD we have today. So, why did Tully react like to this woman the way he did? It turns out she volunteers at The Buddy Foundation where we adopted Tully, and even though she couldnt place him until I told her his old name ( Casper? Really?? ) the bond of the past carried into the present. She told me what a favorite he was and how heartbroken they had been when he had been returned multiple times, each return making him more fearful and wild. A final hug and kisses, a promise to stop by again, and Tully watched them walk away with his head held high, tail wagging and Mama telling him what a GOOD Dog he is...
