How would you invest $100,000?” The senior Economics classes - TopicsExpress

How would you invest $100,000?” The senior Economics classes have spent the last 10 weeks answering that very question. Ms. Kahre’s senior economics classes just finished participating in an online Investment simulation game sponsored by the SIFMA Foundation. Students learned about stocks, bonds, and mutual funds and how they are used to finance corporations and why people invest. One very important goal is for them to understand the long-term advantage of market investment and to acquaint them with 401k’s and how the market will impact their lives in the future. As a part of the contest, students were grouped into teams of five or less and then allowed to invest a portfolio of $100,000 dollars. Although a national contest, teams are ranked regionally. Out of 280 high school teams in the Texas region, 8 of the 10 LSA teams placed in the top 100 in overall portfolio investment, with one of our teams placing among the top ten. So how much did they make? The top team in our region earned $111,794.63. LSA’s top team- Team MAYBACK, (Ann Gehrig, Zach Germeroth, Emily Randolph, Eric Seibert, and Sean Reynolds) placed 7th overall with a total portfolio of $105,671.88. Not bad for a couple of months work in a volatile market! Congratulations Team MAYBACK!
