Howdy, Yall! Hope everyones having a great Wednesday evening!! My folks said we had to move, In the middle of the year I was a sophomore, So to a little town called Picher we went, Leaving my hometown of Claremore. I had moved away before, as a kid growing up, So it wasnt really all that bad, But time would prove many years later, My time in Picher was the worst I ever had. Not that the folks werent friendly, Or that they didnt act the way theyd oughter, But many years later we all learned That there was poison in the water! I stayed there the rest of that year, Worked in Claremore that summer, and all. Then started my junior year, Back at Picher High School that fall. Part of the time I played basketball, Part of the time I worked, But all the time I went to school, My duties I couldnt shirk. One of the things I remember, Is how some kids liked to fight, So out on the chat piles we would go And hoped things turned out right. The closest law was a constable, Who patrolled on foot downtown, Or a sheriff over in Miami, Who seldom, if ever, came around. I had an auto mechanics class in the morning, And was sitting on top of a Plymouth, a 53, Concentrating on reaming the ridges, When a fellow walked up, cussing me. Rubbing his head, for effect I guess, He accused me of throwing a bolt, And hitting him in the back of the head, The news gave me quite a jolt. Well, I naturally denied doing it, A Liar, you are,, said he. After school, on the chat pile! I said, And Well just have to see! He agreed, and walked away, I finished my work on the car, Neither of us wanted to get in trouble, Fighting in class was barred! After school, I went to basketball practice, When I came out, he was by his 52 Ford, Two of his friends also with him, My heart into my throat just soared! Not having a car there that day, I asked him when it was over, for a ride. We hopped in the old car and went Out to a chat pile to defend my pride. He threw a punch, I ducked and hit him, He landed a couple with his right, I dont remember too much detail, But it became quite a good fight! After a while we were pretty winded and To catch our breath we took a break to think what to do, His buddies rubbing their knuckles, I figured if I won, Id have to fight them, too. He asked me if Id had enough, I looked at those guys and said, I reckon I know when Im beat. We all piled back into his old Ford, And headed down the street. The next day at school he was bragging Bout how hed whipped me, good and fine, But he had a pretty swollen up face, And nothing was wrong with mine!! Several people came up and asked me, If it really had happened that way, Why, Sure! I said, grinning real big, And calmly walked away! Chester M. Baldwin, August, 6, 2014. Ive often wondered years later, if it was the water, or just a lack of things for teens to do, that made them want to fight so much! But never was there, ever, a mention of a gun or a knife, or any other weapon, and I had no fear at all of him not taking me home, like he said he would! We were somewhat honest in that respect, in those days...... Yall have a great night!!!
