Howers Laser Cartridge Tip of the Day: Repair Or Replace To - TopicsExpress

Howers Laser Cartridge Tip of the Day: Repair Or Replace To repair or replace...that is the question. Sometimes it is a difficult decision to make in regards to repair your existing printer or to replace it with something new. There are several questions you need to ask yourself. Does my existing printer do all that is required of it? How much will it cost to replace it with something new that will do this same job as well or better than my existing printer? We suggest that you look at how long you have had your existing printer and how many pages of use (page count) does it currently have on it. For instance I went on a call to a customers the other day that had an HP 4500 Color Laserjet printer. This printer is about 12 -15 years old but it only had 35K pages of use on it. It is going to need a Transfer Belt Assembly and a Fuser Assembly that costs several hundred dollars each. A new comparable printer costs about $800 - $1200.00. The existing printer works fine and does all the customer needs it too and is in overall good repair and 35K pages is a very low page count. The customer, in this case opted to keep the existing printer and spend the $400- 500.00 to repair it rather than buy a new printer for $800 - $1200.00. In my opinion this was a good choice and saved them $300 - $700.00. Another customer has an HP P2015 printer. It has 285K pages on it and only cost $400.00 originally. It needs a Fuser Assembly that costs $275.00 installed. They can buy a new printer of equal stature for $400.00. In this case they opted not to repair but to replace. In my opinion this was a good move on their part due to the relatively low cost of replacement. It all really comes down to personal choice, but throwing out a good useable printer when the repair bill is less than 2/3 the price of a new printer is not a good idea as long as the page count is low and it does all that it is required to do...especially on the high end printers. At the same time, putting 3/4 of the price of a new printer into a repair bill is not a great idea either when you can have new modern technology...especially on a lower end printer. This is the advice I give all my clients. I always give them all the options and let them make the choice that most suits their needs.
