Hows it looking for snow on Thanksgiving? The latest run of the GFS (American) and the ECMWF (European) models now both indicate a dry Thanksgiving day for north central and northeast Colorado. In the first diagram, GFS and ECMWF upper level and surface weather conditions are presented for 11 AM MDT Thanksgiving day. Within the past 24 hours, the ECMWF model has become just as dry as the GFS model. The latest run of these models now indicate a large upper level ridge of high pressure over the Rocky Mountain region and a dry (nearly cloudless) atmosphere over Colorado. Models also indicate a lee trough (an elonged area of low pressure) along the base of the Front Range. Such a setup would favor the formation of a dry and temperature moderating downslope wind off the Front Range. The second diagram contains two vertical cross sections depicting atmospheric/weather conditions predicted by the GFS and ECMWF for 11 AM MST Thanksgiving day. Cross sections are drawn along a line extending from the Colorado Front Range west of Denver to the northeast corner of Colorado. Note the similarities in these cross sections. Keep in mind, what you see now in the models may change, possibly several times, before Thanksgiving day. Therefore, stay up-to-date by monitoring the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service (weather.gov/boulder) and/or through other news and information sources. #cowx
