How’s this for advertising? There’s a line in our show (Night of the Living Beauty Pageant, April 3 &4 at 7:00 pm!) when a gangster thug says, “Put a gag in her chops!” The statement’s made to get rid of an elderly lady that keeps interfering with his evil plans. The first time Owen heard the line he asked me what a gag was. I told him that we’d use a scarf or handkerchief. I remember him looking confused and somewhat horrified, but at the same time, I had several other actors asking me questions so I forgot about our conversation. As the show plays out, the lady is eventually captured and comes out on stage with a gag in her mouth, unable to speak. Today’s practice provided Owen with his first opportunity to actually see that scene rehearsed. As he was watching the action, I noticed a huge moment of clarity and relief sweep over him. When I asked him about his reaction, his explanation left me weak with laughter. It would seem that all this time my poor son had confused the word “chops” and “cheeks”................and I don’t mean the ones on your face. No wonder he was relieved. God love him.
