Hoyas win War Memorial Regatta The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in two events last weekend. The results are as follows: War Memorial Regatta @ Old Dominion – 18 Teams A div. 1st Nevin Snow / Katia DaSilva B div. 3rd Alex Post / Bettina Redway, Isabelle Teare Overall 1. Georgetown 2. Old Dominion 3. St. Mary’s The War Memorial Regatta is the MAISA Coed Conference Championship for the Fall Season. It features the top 18 teams from the conference and is typically the hardest in-season event of the year. It also helps determine a teams schedule for the following year, so there is a lot on the line. The regatta was sailed at Old Dominion University in their fleet of FJ’s. Saturdays forecast was for light wind and that’s basically what we had. A light westerly of about 4-8 mph. We started out a little slowly with a 9,8 in A division. Nevin and Katia had trouble getting off the pin and either fouled or were second row. They were able to salvage two top tens but they were not at their best. We needed a good set in B division and that’s exactly what we got. Alex Post and Bettina Redway started out with a 3,1. They sailed fast and smart and that gave the team a great amount of confidence. Nevin and Katia then went out and dominated A division. They got a 2,1,1,2 in the next four races and never finished worse than fifth. Alex and Bettina got a 1,1 in their next set and the Hoyas jumped out to a big early lead. Unfortunately, Alex had to withdraw from a race with incidental contact off the starting line. That added 20 points to our score and put us in a fight for first place with Navy, St. Mary’s and Old Dominion. We ended the day with a 5 point lead. The forecast for Sunday was for NW winds 20-25 mph. It was more like 15-20 but it was still windy when we arrived. Alex and Isabelle Teare had a great start in their first race but fouled on the layline and had to spin a 720 putting them in 14th. They did win the next race but our lead was down to 1. The rest of the day saw a seesaw battle with ODU, St. Mary’s and Georgetown each taking the lead and then giving it away. This time around, it was the other teams who had bad races in the end and the Hoyas finished strong. With just a few points separating 1st from 3rd going into the last race, the Hoyas needed to sail well to win. Alex and Isabelle did just that winning wire to wire. It was an impressive victory for the Hoyas and marked the third year in a row the Hoyas have won the War Memorial. Combined with our win at last springs Conference Championship the win at the War gives the Hoyas the #1 ranked schedule for 2014. A big thanks to Chris Behm ’08 who came out to support the Hoyas each day. The Hoya Women’s team traveled to Boston to compete in the New England Women’s Championship. This regatta is the conference championship for the NEISA conference and every team there brought their best sailors. Saturday wasn’t a good day for sailing. The Charles River barely showed a breathe of air and no races were held. There was a lot of fanfare on the river as the Boston Red Sox had their victory parade go right by the boats. We had two big Red Sox fans on our team so for Hollis and MaryKate it was a pretty cool experience. We did get some wind on Sunday, but it was from the shiftiest direction possible. The Charles River is one of my least favorite places to sail because it can be so unpredictable, but college sailing has some of its most competitive events there so if you want good competition you have to sail on the Charles. Both divisions had good races and not so good races. MaryKate and Genevieve actually fared pretty well in A division ending up in 9th overall. Merritt and Hollis started off well and seemed to have the Charles figured out. But, normal sailing logic doesn’t always work on the Charles and the pair had a few double digits to end the regatta. In the end the Hoyas finished 12th out of 18. In A division MaryKate Mezzetti and Genevieve Burgoyne finished 9th. In B Merritt Moran and Hollis Dana finished 17th. This weekend the Hoyas will be competing in two events: ICSA Singlehanded National Championships @ Newport, RI Greg Martinez Hap Moore Team Race Regatta @ Coast Guard Sean Golden / Elizabeth Mullarney Massimo Mazzolini / Isabelle Teare Jack Gerli / Emily Fung
