Hsw 012014 > Horse of the Year- Wise Dan 2013 Wise Dan appears to be a deserving winner of the Horse of the Year trophy- his rain-soaked Kentucky run in the Firecracker Stakes and other noble efforts certainly made him a contender for year end honors- in my opine only Animal Kingdom, was his equal as far as star quality, projection, feats and class- (if those qualities are considered in the electoral process)- moments off “flash: were draped about several others in 2013- Will Take Charge and his bitter foe Mucho Macho Man, and Princess of Sylmar were fine exhibits as well- But the votes or however the horse of the year determination comes about were Wise Dan’s in the end, and now he is twice Horse of the Year etc.- Wise Dan, is a modestly bred gelding - Wiseman’s Ferry x Lisa Danielle x Wolf Power (SAF) - perhaps the major pivot of the 5 generation printout of Wise Dan is that his granddame Askmysecretary, is sired by mightiest horse and undoubtedly the king of beasts, Secretariat- Secretariat, has in his way a profound effect on the modern breeding landscape, as many sire lines and stakes winners carry his name about them- Storm Cat & Gone West & AP Indy, are the major sires stemming from Secretariat, sired matrons- but if one peers at European and South American etc. stakes pedigrees, Secretariat’s influence seems no more marked than Gummo’s!! but that is a tale for another day- since Wise Dam, is Horse of the Year for 2013, a brief look at his pedigree page should add to our viewing pleasure next time he returns to the racing battlefield- Foaled in 2007 Wise Dan is a chestnut sans some manly parts- his female entourage are tribe 5-H- which is one of the greatest of race horse pantries = so that if we traverse time backwards, breeding students would come upon the paddocks of Ann Of The Forest, circa 1790!! And indeed she is the 20th dm of the 2012-13 Horse of the Years- and Ann Of The Forest, is repository of many of the sports foundation sires and mares- Crab & Regulus and Alcock’s Arabian & Crofts Partner & Sister To Old Country Wench, the latter “granny” to Marske and Regulus! Perhaps of most significance in the genetic garb of Ann Of The Forest 20th dam to Wise Dan, is that Eclipse and Matchem, both appear in her 2nd generation- Soldiers of the 5-h army include Sadler’s Wells, and Lac Ouimet & St. Jovite, winner of the n1992 Irish Derby - others include German heavyweight Sharper, and European star, Reform etc. Another fine card in Wise Dan’s deck is Lyphard, who sired his 3rd dam Laquiola- Lyphard, is in the paperwork of Animal Kingdom 4x4 and in my opinion “Dan” and Animal Kingdom were the best horses in America in 2012 and they were again in 2013- even if Animal Kingdom raced but once or twice on our shores in 2013- and it should be added that the great trio of imports Lyphard & Caro & Blushing Groom are of unquestioned vitality when put into a pedigree- Like most other thoroughbreds, the pedigree page is filled with many legendary names, but in a champion the names become electrified- thusly we find Secretariat at 5x3 in Wise Dan, and champion of all champion stallions Northern Dancer, ingratiates himself at 5x5 inside the dossier of Wise Dan- other repeated names are Round Table and Princequillo- it has long been known that Round Table, is a profound influence on the grass and this notion holds preeminently true in the case of Wise Dan, who has made winning G1 grass stakes his forte- The figure work for Wise Dan, for readers not familiar with them, are dosage profile >1-3-4-2-0 and a dosage index >1.50 -his GSV rank : 56.46 will send no one to find a frame for it- his broodmare sire array is quite ample >Wolf Power - South African HOY in 1984-> Secretariat, triple crown winner in 1974> Lyphard, one of the best and influential sires of the modern stud book> Beau Prince, a runner who squared off against mighty mare Meld, in the St. Leger (GB) of 1955- the all-important 5th dam of Wise Dan, is French bred Vali (1954) her sire was Professional chef de race courageous Sunny Boy, of the intensely inbred (Galopin 3x2) Flying Fox, male line - anyway, breeders seeking an engine to mix with their mares may inquire of Niagara Causeway (?) a dimly recollected sire, who is a close relation to Wise Dan, in fact “Dan” has a brother Successful; Dan, who has won stakes but alas he is also missing some bits, so he can’t get a mare in foal- perhaps Scalo, is standing in Europe - the sire of little use Atticus, is a member of Wise Dan’s family- and in many ways a horse of similar predilections as his superior “cousin” Wise Dan-- The French star Val de Loir, a excellent stallion as well, is also a member of the immediate mishpoochar of Wise Dan, superior families like 5-H continually out flourish other branches of the great tree of the breed- and in the case of Wise Dan, he may be a triumph of family over immediate family, although his parents and grandfather maternal were all fine horses, one would not expect something the stature of Wise Dan to be their issue- Hsw @2014
