Hub Camp yesterday was fun and inspiring, but.... if we are pushing Lithuania as a software development paradise, I have to ask.... Do we have enough good coders? Or are they all locked in low-ranking universities doing useless 4-year degree courses, learning stuff that employers dont need? Is anyone teaching these kids how to code in the real world? Most of the coders who apply to work in my company cant even write a CV or speak English properly. And they have zero experience of the office environment and commercial projects. And I totally dont care what Uni they went to, and I dont care if they have a degree or not. I quit Uni to learn coding, and got a job instantly. Why learn coding in a University? It makes no sense. If you give me half the money it costs to train a student, Ill employ an 18 year-old kid and teach him everything he needs in one year. If he keeps the job for four years Ill even give him a piece of paper with Graduated written on it, if you insist on that kind on nonsense. Win win?
