Hubbards Marina at Johns Pass Fishing Report: 10/21/14 Inshore: Mike McDonald, a St. Petersburg local, reported catching some nice flounder on live green backs from the north jetty inside Johns Pass. Cody Butterick, also a St. Petersburg local, said the slot sized redfish were enjoying the live green backs too but they were more aggressive with the free-lined baits. Jared Insborf, a Madeira Beach local, was doing well catching mackerel with spoons. However, he was waiting to see large bait schools before casting his mackerel lures. When the bait schools weren’t there Jared was catching large black drum on live pilchers using heavy weight and casting into the deepest part of the pass. Matt Cardozo, from Largo, was catching nice redfish on live shrimp in the pass too. He said the shrimp were working best near the bottom for the redfish and flounder. Devin Pate, from Pinellas Park, said the snook bite is mainly at night. He reported catching half dozen big boys from the north jetty using shrimp. However, most anglers during the day reported little to no snook action so if you want a big snook you should go after them at the beginning or end of the strongest tide of the night. Nearshore: The red grouper are super aggressive now that were not allowed to keep them. It has been tough to get baits past them to the gags. We have had most success using large live bait to avoid the red grouper, but then trying to get these fat gags off the bottom is a whole different challenge. If you’re using the right tackle, the gags are much easier to land. Remember to bring the heavy stuff while fishing during the cooler months when the fat gags come inshore to play. We are also getting the kingfish now on our all day and half day trips. The hogfish are also getting frisky as of lately, and they are loving the live shrimp. Offshore: If you haven’t gone online to see our 63 hour photos, you should! Last weekend’s long range trip did so well that when they backed in at 6am Sunday morning the crew, captain and guests were so pumped it looked like they were just leaving. The grouper poured off the boat as it unloaded. They brought in over 100 keeper grouper for the 15 anglers on board. We had snowy, yellow edge, gags, scamp, and strawberry grouper. We also caught barrel fish, glass eye snapper, mahi mahi, sailfish, kingfish, monster porgy, triple tail and others! Upcoming at Hubbard’s Marina Want to try a specialty trip in 2015?
