Hug your horse today! Actually….hug your cat, friend, dog, mom, rabbit, dad, fish, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin…..you get the point! Life is too short and to precious to not tell those that youre close to that you care. That being said, Tashunka has lost one of our herd. Since early spring we had been noticing changes in Chance, the mustang gelding that I adopted for the 2012 Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover. I had assumed he just had a hard winter, so we got his teeth checked, increased grain, made sure he was getting plenty of groceries. In August he was exhibiting progressively worsening muscle atrophy, incoordination, uneven stance, falling down, unresponsive behavior, etc. Physical testing pointed to neurological disease, but he received a negative test for EPM. Last week he suffered a seizure, and appears to have had another 1 or 2 since. Chance got me hooked on the unique bond that develops when working with Mustangs, and I know I will never be the same because of him. He touched the lives of thousands of people while at Tashunka and was a great ambassador for wild horses. Chance is being cremated. Part of his ashes will be spread here at Tashunka and the other part will be spread with his family and original herd on the Beatys Butte HMA in Oregon. Thank you to those that dropped off donations to help with the cost of cremation. That was a heart warming surprise and a huge help! Thank you to everyone that has been apart of his life and loved him in his short time with us. Special thanks to all the staff at Rainland Farm Equine Clinic for their support, caring, and compassion from the beginning to end. I do hope that Chance is in greener pastures now without seizures or pesky flies!
