Huge tax-arrears of rupees 550 crores against BCCI for which information is available : May be even more It refers to latest RTI response dated 30.07.2013 from Income Tax Department subsequent to a CIC-verdict revealing that huge Income-Tax arrears of rupees 550 crores are pending towards super-rich Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) information for which has been provided from assessment-years from 2006-07 to 2010-11. There may be tax-demands pending for earlier years also for which data is not made available. Surprisingly Income Tax Department has not cared to complete assessment-proceedings for assessment-years 2011-12 and 2012-13 where also tax-demands can be further added against BCCI. It is indeed regretting and surprising that huge amount of rupees 196 crores is pending to be recovered in respect of assessment-year 2006-07. Income Tax Department should also give data of tax-arrears against BCCI prior to assessment-year 2006-07. Income Tax Department should (a) immediately complete assessment-proceedings against BCCI till date including for assessment-years 2011-12 and 2012-13 (b) decide all BCCI appeals against assessments immediately (c) take stringent-most action including attachment of BCCI bank-account to recover heavy tax-dues pending against BCCI. Income tax Department should initiate an enquiry to fix responsibility on its erring personnel who left assessment-proceedings pending against BCCI for too long, and those who failed to take suitable action against BCCI for recovery of such huge tax-dues. Income Tax Department should put on website list of tax-defaulters mentioning amount of tax to be recovered also as an effective step to reduce tax-arrears. It may be mentioned that civic-bodies in Delhi displays names of property-tax defaulters prominently on road-crossings to shame those not caring to pay taxes voluntarily.
