HuiYaNeh Mini Octopus and Mung Bean Pancakes If eating live - TopicsExpress

HuiYaNeh Mini Octopus and Mung Bean Pancakes If eating live octopus is still on your Korean to-do list, perhaps you should take an intermediary step before taking the plunge. Instead of wrestling with sticky suction cups and worm-like wriggling while gnawing on the chewy, rubbery tentacles of a full-size live octopus, try fully-cooked baby octopuses* marinated in your choice of spice. Koreans enjoy baby octopuses in stews, stir-fried or grilled. This reviewer prefers it grilled. Heck, grill all the foods. After missing the entrance to the narrow alley, we found Huiyaneh at the end of that alley, facing its sister restaurant of Huiyaneh Galbi. We dined on a Friday night around 8-9 pm. Never was there an empty table. The wait line loitering outside was at least two parties deep for the better part of the hour. When you order the required two servings of baby octopus (10k/serving) or more, you will be asked how spicy you want it. The flavors are mildly spicy/normally spicy/very spicy. Be warned: I like hot but normal was flavorful enough. Save your innards some grief and skip very spicy unless youre a masochist. (I also dont eat rice with my meal so if you do, maybe very spicy is worth a shot). Your server will bring you your first round of side dishes. If you ask them for more, you will be pointed to the self-serve side dish bar (not that I know from experience or anything). Order the mung bean pancakes (9k/4ct). Dont argue. Theyre delicious. They may come before or after your octopus but they will still be delicious. Dip it in the provided sauce and have it with a sliver of onion. Even as I write this, I want to order some of those tasty cakes to go, right now. When your octopus comes to your table, it will be on an aluminum gridiron. You will be told that it is fully cooked and you can eat immediately. This is a loose translation of the instructions posted on the wall from memory, but you get the gist. Instructions how to eat: 1) you should cut them for bite-size pieces 2) you can dip it in mayonnaise and wrap it in perilla leaf 3) you can eat the octopus with egg, sprouts, cabbage, dressing etc. After you are almost done, the fried rice (5k/feeds 2) can be ordered at any time and will come to your table already prepared in an extremely hot, wok-style pan. It rounds out the meal. Next stop: Huiyaneh Galbi. *The plural is octopuses. Check your dictionary. It will be the first (most correct) entry of a few possible options. Thanks to W.Nind for verification. :) 10000/serving of octopus 9000/4 mung bean pancakes 5000/fried rice (serves at least 2)
