Hull City fans have been left furious after the club’s owner Assem Allam announced they would be rebranded the Hull City Tigers, labelling their ‘City’ identity ‘common’ and ‘irrelevant’. Allam, who took the reins at Hull in 2010 following their relegation from England’s top flight, believes the new name will make the club ‘special’. ‘Hull City is irrelevant,’ said the Egyptian owner. ‘My dislike for the word ‘City’ is because it is common. ‘City is also associated with Leicester, Bristol, Manchester and many other clubs. ‘I don’t like being like everyone else. I want the club to be special. ‘It is about identity. City is a lousy identity. Hull City Association Football Club is so long.’ Football, once simply a sport, has increasingly seen clubs take a more ‘business-like’ approach in recent years, with finances playing an ever more important role in the game. And Allam insists the ‘Tigers’ name will present far stronger marketing opportunities in the future. ‘In the commercial world, the shorter the name, the better. The more it can spread quickly,’ he added. ‘I have always used short names in business. It gives you power in the science in marketing. ‘The shorter, the more powerful the message. In Tigers, we have a really strong brand.’ Should Hull have been renamed the Hull City Tigers???? -K❼ [Share]
