“Human beings are like the individual jets of flame on a gas stove. God is the reservoir of gas underneath. “The larger the opening of a jet, the stronger also the flame. Even so, the more we open ourselves to God’s presence within us, the greater the light and power that He can manifest in our lives. “Again, the smaller the opening of a gas jet, the weaker the flame. Even so, the more we close ourselves off from God, through pride and through indifference to the needs of others, the weaker the flame of power and inspiration in our lives. “A clogged opening may not even ignite at all, even though a little of the gas still manages to leak through it. Many people, similarly, are so lacking in inner vitality that the most one can say of them is that they exist; they are not, properly speaking, alive. These are the kind of people to whom Jesus referred when he said, ‘Let the dead bury their dead.’”
