Human rights campaigners and Global Unions highlight impact of Hong Kongs investors on wages in Asian garment industry Opportunity for interview: Trade union leaders share first hand experience of poverty pay and human rights violations caused by Hong Kong investment in garment industry. Representatives from Cambodia, Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia available for interview. Date: Monday 17th November, 2014 Time: 3:00pm Address: 5/F Diamond Room, City View Hotel, 23 Waterloo Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong Global Union Federations representing workers making and selling clothing are gathering in Hong Kong on Monday to discuss solutions to the problem of poverty wages for workers in global supply chains. The role Chinese investors play in the global garment industry race to the bottom on wages will be clearly emphasised at the summit through trade union leaders from Cambodia, Sri Lanka and others. The summit hopes to see the start of a coordinated global effort to address the problem of poverty wages caused by the globalisation of the industry. At the initiative of the Asia Floor Wage Alliance, Global Union Federations IndustriALL, UNI, ITUC, and representatives from ILO, ITF and IUF will hear evidence of human rights violations faced by workers in the industry, and the impact of these on communities and families, and jointly seek broad solutions. Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA) established in 2009 are an international alliance of Trade Unions and labour rights activists, working together to demand garment workers are paid a living wage. AFWA, in collaboration with the Permanent People’s Tribunal, organised a series of National Peoples Tribunals on Living Wage for Garment Workers in Asian Garment Industry (NPTs) between 2011 and 2014.[1] These have led to the Synthesis Hearing on Decent Work and Living Wage in the Global Garment Industry taking place on Monday in Hong Kong. The Synthesis Hearing aims to 1) take the National People’s Tribunal (NPT) process from the national to the international level; 2) absorb the learnings from the Tribunals and recommend future steps for the implementation of a living wage; 3) Consolidate engagement with the Global Union Federations (GUFs), especially in view of developing a brand bargaining strategy. [1]The Permanent Peoples Tribunal is an international opinion tribunal independent from State authorities. Founded in Italy in 1979, It examines and provides judgements relative to violations of human rights and rights of people. Contact person: Rena Lau (65817426) globalmon.org.hk/
