Human rights woes for the Dominican state are numerous as the ongoing trial of Benito Tide Mendez et al vs the Dominican Republic continues on Tuesday and Wednesday with public hearings scheduled at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in Mexico City. Six families of Haitian descent are claiming that in 1999 and 2000 they were "arbitrarily detained and collectively deported" from homes and land they owned for years in the D.R. Counsel for the offended say it is the cause of the institutionalized practice by the Dominican state of racial profiling and discrimination against Haitians.
